That’s So Girly: What’s up with the gender binary?

Sometimes I cannot understand the gender binary, wait, amend that – I don’t understand the gender binary. It seems random attributes or actions have been assigned as either masculine or feminine. This is just strange in my opinion so let’s take a closer look at some random things that have been defined as feminine.

Femininity is…

  • wearing pink. Seriously people, it’s a color, and liking a specific color cannot be gendered. I just… I just… can’t. Besides, it was only decided in the 1940’s that pink was for girls and blue was for boys, before that it was the opposite. So clearly, it makes no difference, it is all just crap branding and marketing that persuades us that being born with lady bits makes someone feel more comfortable in a frilly pink dress.
  • applying a facial mask. I do masks and peels and I invariably get surprised comments from people because “that’s so girly”! Hmmm, sure, because masculinity is defined as not caring about your appearance, in fact, no masculine person (in the binary definition) cuts their hair, trims their beard or wears well-fitting clothing, potato sacks all around! Luckily, potato sacks are brown so no reduction on your masculinity points there, whew.
  • listening to pop music by cis-female artists. Somehow music genres or artists have been separated into their respective sides of the binary. If you bring up Christina Aguilera or Miley Cyrus, these are somehow classified on the feminine side whereas Pharrell Williams is approved for masculine consumption. What makes this imaginary divide? The beats are pretty much the same so I guess it is the lyrics? Come on, do you really think that if you sing out loud about a “he” in a song people will think you want a d*ck in your mouth right that very minute? I sing along to heteronormative songs where a cis-female is talking about grinding up on her man and I have not once had to combat any unwanted sexual advances from confused men assuming that I was on the market for some c*ck.
  • playing with barbies. So my thought is that barbie is a hyper sexualized version of a cis-female body. That you can undress. Excuse me if I can’t understand the classification as a feminine toy. If anything, wouldn’t it be biased towards the masculine side of the spectrum or for those that are attracted to femininity?

Somehow this became a little more rant-y than I originally intended but I’m trying to make a point through humor here people! Anyways, hope you at least got a chuckle out of the weird world defined by the binary. 01101110 01100101 01110010 01100100 00100000 01101010 01101111 01101011 01100101
